Kombucha Leather

Material: Kombucha Leather is a flexible bio-material that is grown by a symbiotic culture between bacteria and yeast. On the surface of the mixture a scobby grows, which is washed and dried to produce the leather. Then the next one grows, it is a zero waste production. The piece I´ve used is 13x16 cm (5,1x6,3 inch).

Tools: Cutting plotter, cutting blade, wood frame for fixing.

Process: I started my classical folding process by preparing the Miura Ori crease pattern for the cutting plotter. The Crease lines are perforated by the blade of the cutting plotter. Then it is folding time, I folded the straight lines first and then the zig zag lines. The finished fold is fixed into a wood frame. Due to the natural ingredients of the material, the kombucha leather changed into a darker color over time and got a weathered texture.
